June 8, 2017 meeting: Beer and Cheese pairing

What beer would go best with these cheeses?
Learn about pairing at June 2017 meeting
Some many cheeses- what beers should I pair with these?

Meeting time is 7:30 pm at Norwood Community Center.

Topic is beer and cheese pairings.
We will taste 5 different styles of cheeses and each cheese will be paired with 2 different styles of beer that compliment the flavors of the beers and the cheese.

I love cheese! But it tastes better with beer!

As always: eye popping raffle will conclude the meeting.

National Home Brew Day May 6th 2017

Join your fellow home brewers May 6, 2017 at Rivertown Brewing Company in MONROE.

Please note the location change!
Set-up starts at 9 am in the dock area – it’s a nice, big open space! Filtered water & yeast pitches will be available – the San Diego strain. I’ll post if other yeasts become available. The water profile is the same as Lockland. However – this year, we will not have access to hot water – the flow rate from the new equipment is way too high to do this safely. Make sure to bring all of your brewing equipment – including hoses for your chiller, etc. Please bring plastic or metal fermenters – glass breaks… OK to bring snacks for the morning – these need to stay in the dock area. The restaurant opens at 10 am. AHA members – bring your card or Brew Guru APP for a 10% discount on food. We are still working to confirm sharing of homebrew. We are hoping to be able to allow this in the dock area only. The Monroe location has a full bar – including guest taps & regional wines/spirits. Once brewing is done, we can pack up & move our social time to the patio. We’ll have a quick tour of the new brewery, too. Closed toe shoes & safety glasses (safety glasses provided) are required for a brewery tour – no exceptions. We should be done well before the Kentucky Derby starts – so you can get to your party (or watch the race at Rivertown).

March Meeting -March Madness “Sweet 16”

Since it’s March- it means brackets.  Our meeting centered on selecting the best beer from the 16 beers.

Chris Siegman chose 8 commercial beers to compete with club members beers.  We had 9 club members bring beer so we dropped a commercial beer and used that as the prize for the evening.

The brackets were drawn putting a homebrew up against a commercial beer.  The beers were poured into pitchers and assigned a number.  Non-judges knew the numbers and kept the brackets moving.  Judges were blinded.  In the first rounds, no judges were judging their own beer.

Members were divided into regions (tables) and the beers were judged against each other.  All the judges knew was the base style of beer: porter, session IPA, Pilsner, ect.

Each region sent the best beer from there table to the final four.

These were Kelly Pendergraft’s Imperial Amber against Rheingeist’s Knowledge- Double IPA

And the other bracket sent Mike Florez’s Madagascar Vanilla English Porter against Lucian Florea’s Cream Ale

The final two were: Rheingeist’s Knowledge- Double IPA vs Mike Florez’s Madagascar Vanilla English Porter

The winner was Rheingeist’s Knowledge- Double IPA

Homebrews made a fantastic showing with 3 of the final 4.

Click on the PDF to see how the brackets went down.

Let’s do this again next year!
